A world-class veteran defender could be on his way to West Ham this Summer on a free transfer.

Very few expected Borussia Dortmund to get to the Champions League final this season. For a while now, they’ve been underachieving in the Bundesliga and this year was no different. However, against all odds they did go all the way to Wembley and a lot of that comes down to one player.

Mats Hummels has been one of the most criminally underrated defenders of this generation. Despite a three year spell at Bayern Munich sandwiched between his time at Dortmund, he’s undoubtedly a cult hero of the Yellows.

Not only was his defending pivotal to their Champions League run, but he also scored the vital goal against PSG that sent his side to the final.

Surprisingly though, the centre-backs contract he’s been allowed to expire and he is now a free agent. According to West Ham Zone, the Hammers could look to sign him to patch up their leaky defence.

The big issue with signing the German is his wage, he’d have to be made one of the highest earners at the club but the board are keen on making the wage structure more set in stone.

At 35-years-old, he still would be able to do an immense job for the Hammers and may be exactly the sort of veteran Julen Lopetegui needs to get his side ticking. It’s just about whether his wages are something the club are willing to pay as, if they do, this could cause others to question why they’re not earning a similar amount.
