Flynn Downes could be set for a return to his former club Ipswich Town this summer, as they have joined Southampton in the race for his signature, according to the Mirror.

Flynn Downes continues to drum up interest after an awe-inspiring season on the South Coast last campaign. The midfielder excelled in a deep midfield role, making 33 Championship appearances for the play-off winners.

The Brentwood-born midfielder was a product of the Ipswich Academy, spending fifteen years at the club between 2006 and 2021. He made 92 appearances for The Tractor Boys, netting three times before joining Swansea in the summer of 2021.

Downes impressed massively in his one season with the Swans under Russell Martin, earning a £8m move to the Hammers. Downes played a squad role in the 22/23 season, making 21 appearances, and helping the club win the Europa Conference League.

The England U20 international reunited with Russell Martin at Southampton in the Championship last summer, in the hope of more regular first-team football. Martin was again thrilled with Downes’ performances and is desperate to sign him on a permanent deal this summer. But with Ipswich looking to make lots of reinforcements after being promoted, they could stand in the Saints’ way.
